Large, authentic, antique Burmese lacquered gilded statue of the crowned Shakyamuni Buddha, 19th Century, Mandalay period, Burma.

The statue is finely hand-carved in wood and covered with a reddish-brown lacquer highlighted with gold and encrusted with colored glass fragments.

His eyes with a white sclera and a black pupil are made of a single piece of shaped glass.

An antique Japanese Chobako (merchant small chest) made of Kiri (Paulownia) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Hikute style handles. 8 drawers of varying sizes used to store merchant wares for sale. Unusual wooden lip surrounding the top where seller showcased each item for sale to the buyer. Custom made tansu specific to the seller needs. Constructed using hardened wooden nails and Japanese joinery.

Antique Japanese stoneware jar from Shigaraki kiln. Beautifully uneven form with high shoulders, tapered body and a narrow foot. Made using the local sandy clay from the bed of Lake Biwa, Shigaraki ware is identified by the embedded granules of feldspar. Mineral glaze is spattered over the surface and areas of dark ash adds depth and a prized natural beauty. Shigaraki is known as one of the 6 great pottery regions of Japan.

Antique Japanese mounted carving of a group of 6 flying bats. Sculpted with detail and lacquered gold, the group moves together through the air like a small cloud. Mounted and framed in a plexiglass shadow box. Bats are symbols of prosperity and good luck. This carving was most likely part of a larger temple decoration.

Antique Japanese small zushi (traveling shrine). Red lacquer case opens to reveal the Buddha in the moment in which he attains parinirvana, dies and is released from the cycle of rebirth. Here he is recumbent on his side on an elongated lotus bed on a two tiered stand carved with blossoming branches and waves. The whole interior of the zushi is lacquered gold as is the Buddha while the lotus petals are delicately painted in colors with gold details.

A breathtaking swirling platter by important contemporary Shino artist Hayashi Shotaro enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Manyosai Zuimaki Ita Shiho-zara (Four-sided Slab Dish with Myriad Leaves Color Tornado).
