Bishamonten is cheif of the Four Heavenly Kings and is the guardian of the northern direction (in Japan he is one of the Seven Lucky Gods), he holds a small pagoda in one hand symbolizing the divine treasure house, whose contents he both guards and gives away. Seated atop a lotus throne, the buddha makes a gesture of reassurance, abbaya mudra, with his right hand, and a gesture of liberality with his left hand, varada mudra. There is an inset inscription on the left. Chosun Dynasty 17th/18th century. It measures 50" wide by 54" tall by 2.5" deep. Incense marks throughout.
