This is Tsutsugaki used in the Tohoku district. This was dyed with an indigo plant. As for it, dark blue and light blue contrast are fair. The cotton spun by hand has good texture. The local custom, the way of thinking affect the motif of Tsutsugaki. It is a very rare thing to adjust the hanging scroll of the letter to a theme happy. Ivory satin robe, decorated with butterflies and flowers in various shades of pink, blue, and yellows, black satin detailing with cranes and butterflies, edged in deep blue. Gorgeous deep blue sleeves depict a dragon and phoenix coming into confrontation.
Chinese dragons represent masculinity and darkness while the phoenix (or feng-huang) represents femininity and light. The sleeves have an interior lining of bright green satin.

Wooden sculpture of an old man and woman taking a break from the rice harvest. They are sitting on an elevation. He is preparing his pipe, taking tobacco out of his tonkotsu. She is getting out a lunch box and two tea cups, while the tea kettle is at her feet. Behind them a sheaf of rice and two sickles. Perhaps a modern reference to Jo and Uba, the old couple on the island Takasago who symbolize longevity.

A fabulous Japanese cloisonne vase purchased from the 1893 Chicago Exhibition. Inside the vase is an old decaying leaflet given to the buyers by the exhibitors. Up for sale is our oldest Japanese Tokkuri (Sake bottle). It dates from the Momoyama Period with an age of 400 years and has a very tasteful glaze with vivid colours. Close to the bottom there is a kiln mark (refer to picture no. 6)

The Tokkuri can be used with a little flower as a wabi arrangement. It is in good condition with a crack on the top of the tokkuri, which enforces the wabi look.

A Tokkuri with this age is absolutely rare.
