A bronze bell dated Kanbun 10 (1670) which would have been suspended in front of a Shinto shrine worship hall, and struck with a knotted rope to awaken the gods to listen to one’s prayers. Inscribed in the surface around dials of lotus flowers is: An auspicious day in the 7th month of Kanbun 10, followed by the names Honda Yasutoki Ko and Hiramoto Sukeyuki opposite a dedication to the god of water the Hachidairyu-jin followed by a place name near Awazu in modern day Shiga prefecture...
The Kura
sold, thank you Veins of green Kai-yu meander over the body of this spectacular example of Edo period Tamba Pottery capping rich red clay rising from an abrupt base. A few bubbles in the clay reveal character about the torso, the lip powerfully rendered over the shoulder, which slumps to one side like some haggard but still proud old soldier. Four looping handles (mimi) would allow the lid to be tied down. Between two a drip from the roof of the kiln has adhered to the clay forming a point of interest...
The Kura
Sold, Thank you! A large 17th to 18th century Buddhist sculpture of a Rakan (arahat), well sculpted, his naked torso gilded in gold with robes and shoes in black lacquer, carrying a large urn which is an active incense burner. The sculpture is 2 feet (61 cm) tall and in overall fine condition. There are minor losses to the lacquer and gilding typical of age, and a repair to his left foot. Both little fingers are missing from his hands; these could be repaired if desired at additional cost.
Excellent early Edo example of old Karatsu ware shouldered (Katatsuki) tea caddy attested by renowned art researcher and collector Katsura Matasaburo (1901-1986).
Katsura Matasaburo is a pioneer of old Bizen ware research... Early edition Japanese shin hanga woodblock print titled "Boats at Shinagawa, Night" (aka “Shinagawa Coast”) from the series “Tokyo Views” (Tokyo Fukei) by Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) dated in the right margin "5th month of Showa 10" (1935). The black ink signature and red seal of the artist are at the lower right. The seals of the publisher Doi Sadaichi (used 1933-1945), carver Ikeda, and printer Matsushita are in the lower left margin...
