A fisherman's work wear hand-woven of hemp for both wefts and warps. Both natural color and indigo stripes are hemp yarn, which are hand plied. It is from Tsushima in Nagasaki prefecture, an island located between Korean Peninsula and north Kyushu, and the textile is called Tsushima-asa. In cold districts, such as Tohoku and along the Japan Sea area, cultivation of cotton was difficult and cotton cloth was precious in old days, so that people bought fragments of cotton and made them to noragi, futonji, rugs and so on. Young woman's katabira (unlined kimono made of asa, hemp or ramie) with long sleeves. It is made of Echigo-chijimi, which was woven in Echigo region, now Niigata prefecture. It is handwoven of choma (ramie) whose wefts and warps are hand-plied, and the surface has light shrinkage from twisted warps and wefts. It has hand-painted flower motifs. The lining of collar cloth is thin silk, probably dyed with benibana (safflower). In excellent condition, no hole or no stain. 19th century...

This is a Japanese antique indigo dye cotton Excellent Boro noragi of patched and sashiko stitch Meiji (1868-1912). It was repaired many times, and the boro rag that were used became wonderful folk art by themselves. The patchwork & sashiko stitch of the indigo dye cotton for the repaired is very beautiful. This is impressive kabuki Costume textile of the last part of Edo era.(1800-1867) It is beautiful silk of the dyer's saffron dyeing. A cloud and the applique of the Chinese phoenix which I write the kimono by hand and dyed are on. It has a few stains. However, it does not stand out. Spectacular Meiji Period maru obi c.1900. Woven on both sides with a jacquard loom, the blue/green dyes make this a superb example of a Kyoto style obi. The motifs are fans with pine, plum, bamboo, chrysanthemum and cranes; all auspicious symbols of happiness and good fortune. Excellent condition. Can be made into table runners or hangings.
