A medium sized ido-gata (well shaped) tea bowl with exceptionally fine and beautifully crafted kintsugi gold repairs. One side of the bowl features a thickly applied ferrous glaze that pools generously near the base, while the pale green ashen glaze on the outside is decorated with impressed textured patterns...

TRAY OF RYOKAN

Large wooden tray actually used at old 'ryokan' (Japanese‐style hotel), Showa period, early-mid 20th century, D 35.6-34.8cm (14.01-13.70in), H 5.8cm (2.28in). Aesthetic grain expression and calm comfort for use. Expected some fine scratches due to aging with use. *Only a tray is available to purchase, as the other stuff (cups) of usage example are not attached...

Hard to find nowadays: slightly distorted shoe shaped (kutsugata) tea bowl from the early Edo Period with a rounded brim, made of little iron bearing, coarse, unrefined Mino clay. The expertly thrown body was trimmed with a potter's knife in its lower part around the foot ring.

The whole body was decorated with wide white parallel lines in a white engobe over which a thin line in iron oxide was drawn, over which finally transparent ash glaze was applied - really stunning...

The name “Tobe-ware” first appeared in historical documents in the mid-18th century, though the tradition itself dates back well over 1,000 years. Within this style can be found an abundance of fine porcelain and celadon works as well as works painted with dark ferrous glazes—such as the piece featured here.

The creator of this fine work Sakai Yoshito (b. 1931) has been the main figure in maintaining the Tobe-ware tradition in modern times...

Tibetan yak butter tea “po cha” or barley beer “chang” bowl carved from burlwood, possibly Rhododendron circa 50 to 100 years old. D:11.8cm/4.6in and H: 5cm/1.9in, there is one worn chip on the edge. A charming old piece- difficult to find these days. This was not turned on a lathe, but entirely carved by hand.

This tea bowl crafted by one of the great masters of Japanese pottery depicts Meota Iwa—a famous Japanese landmark in Mie. Symbolizing the union between two divine deities, Izanagi (said to be the larger rock, though there is no consensus on this point) and his wife Izanami, the two are joined by a shimenawa (heavy straw rope used in Japanese Shinto ceremonies). This straw rope is quite massive and must be replaced several times a year in a special ceremony...

Ceramic "tenmoku" bowl of classical shape with thick rim and small base. Fine glazing of "hare fur" type, part of which has run down gracefully to the base. An old accident at a small area on the rim has been restored (see last two photos). China, Song Dynasty period. Height: 4,6 cm. Diameter: 10,7 cm.

Small cast iron tea-pot. One side is decorated with lotus flowers, the other side is without any decoration. The spout is doubled in bronze, the handle is in copper as well as the lid which has a decoration of small rounds in light relief of different patina, perhaps formerly gilded. The grip button is in silver plated copper and shakudo. It is likely that this type of jug was also used for alcohol as specified on the invoice issued by the seller in Kyoto which dates it to 1850...

Tea Ceremony Seto Chaire Tea Caddy of cylindrical form with slightly tapering sides, covered with a light chocolate brown and a running mottled black glaze. Ivory lid lined with gold leaf on the inside. Signed: Hikari. It comes with a silk shifuku storage pouch. Size: H 9,5 x 6 cm. Taisho -Showa period. Good Condition!

TEA CEREMONIAL POT WITH DRIPPING GLAZE

Unique and rare find of an old Japanese double-eared pottery tea utensil ware for the use of flowering or incense made of the well-burnt blackish clay containing rich in iron in the traditional but more like organic forming by refined tebineri (hand-forming) finished with such wildly dripping glaze, 19th - early 20th century, approx. 18.5 x 18.5 x H 16 cm (7.28 x 7.28 x 6.29in).

Mint and elegant tea bowl by one of the greatest potters, Rokubei Kiyomizu VI.
