Japanese cast iron sake kettle (choshi) with the characteristic flattened spout decorated in low relief on one side with prunus blossoms and on the other side with bamboo. The wooden lid is covered with stippled lacquer. These iron kettles were used to heat sake during the cold winter months. Flower form finial. Meiji period (19th century). Measures about 7 3/4" to the top of the handle and about 9 1/2" across to the tip of the spout. The kettle is in very good overall condition...

Japanese Meiji period cast iron tetsubin in lotus form with a Chinese inscription dating 1702 on one petal. The inscription reads “Kangxi forty-second year, 9th month, 6th day, auspicious day made.” Lotus form lid. Measures about 8 1/4” in length by 4 3/4” high (8” including handle). 19th century. Very good overall condition. The handle can stand upright, but it does not balance easily. There is rust to the interior. From a Scottsdale, Arizona collection.

Japanese Meiji Cast Iron Tetsubin with Signature - Hailstone Pattern

The cast iron tetsubin (teapot / kettle) is of course the central feature of the tea ceremony. This example was made during the Meiji period (1868 - 1912) or possibly a little later, the pattern to the upper part of the kettle known as the hailstone or nail head pattern. It has a copper cover that is a perfect fit. There is a signature to the right of the spout and there also appear to be seal marks to the base...

A Japanese kiseru made of brass with silver colored rings, bowl and mouth piece. It is further decorated with a boy and comical looking tiger in overlay silver and engravings of pine trees. The pipe measures 9 1/2" long which includes the bamboo extension. The pipe is from the Meiji period (1868-1912). The Pipe is in good condition with some small scratches and dents from use. The most wear is near the tobacco bowl. The asking price includes free shipping within the USA.

The round brazier (Furo) has an opening on each side; the kettle with a tapering top is finely cast with romping horses, loose ring handles and delicately shaped top with simple knob. The brazier with cast mark 'Nanbu, Morioka, sei(?) mitsu(koi) dou. Nanbu and Mizusawa of Morioka in Iwate prefecture (northern Japan) has been famous for cast iron wares...

This work is a work of famous ceramist Deishi Shibuya of Hagi ware.

It is a Oni-Hagi Hiissen Chawan. Hiissen is Japanese and is a meaning referred to as Washing a brush.

Since form resembles the container from which a brush is washed, it came to be refered to as Hiissen Chawan. The Hagi ware clay with which three kinds of grounds were mixed is used for the clay of this work (Daido, Mishima, Mitake).

The clay which blended rough sand is called Oni-Hagi...

This is a wonderful vintage Japanese Raku style tea cup of Ohi ware with an amazing amber glaze which was made about 50-60 years ago by Rakusai Ohi. The seal of 'Ohi' is stamped on the bottom. The original wooden box with the signature and the seal of the artist is also included.

Ohi ware has become well known for its use of Ame-gusuri, or amber glaze. Being a Raku style, it was low-fired and is quite light and soft in the hands...

A Japanese, Ryukyuan type, lacquer charger. Inlaid mother of pearl decoration of figures in landscape on black lacquer in the center surrounded by red lacquer. A band of black lacquer also exposed just inside the rim - also with mother of pearl inlay. The egde of the charger rubbed for that prized negoro affect of exposing the black lacquer background through an invariably worn coat of red lacquer...
