A Japanese ranma (transom) with a Hinoki (Cypress) frame and a Kusunoki (Camphor) wood hand carved Chiku Bai theme in highly detailed three dimensional relief. Artist signed Tosho Nakajima. Most likely mounted in a wealthy Japanese home or a fancy Ryokan (country inn). Its main theme is a majestic Plum Blossom tree (Bai) accented with Bamboo (Chiku).

The ranma was often mounted above the Fusuma sliding doors between rooms to allow the air to circulate freely...

Extremely rare Japanese antique usagi (rabbit or hare) mask for a Noh performance. Carved of wood and covered with gofun, a raised paste made from ground oyster shells. The surface of the usagi mask is carefully textured so that every hair is visible and some areas are polished from wear. The eyes of the hare are a pink color, similar to those of an albino snow rabbit.

Usagi is the creature most closely associated with the moon...

A wooden sculpture carved from a single block of wood of kannon or kwan yin. The work takes inspiration from the 6th century image at Horyuji temple in Ikaruga, Nara. Jimbo Yutaka (1923~) is known throughout Japan for his wooden sculptures and has done numerous exhibitions. The work comes with a tomobako with the inscription of the title of the work and the artist's signature and seals. The work also contains a signature by the artist. Very beautiful and detailed antique figure of Uga Benzaiten, she is carved of wood and painted with colored and gilt lacquer, she has eight arms each holding a different Buddhist objects, her elaborate crown is made of metal and includes glass beads which hang down and a torii gate which stands at the top, one of the details specific to Uga Benzaiten is the coiled snake that sits on top of her head with the head of a man, Edo Period...

It is a unique peace of buddhist art, as it bears on its back a writing with black ink from a Samurai. The charakters mean Saikoku Sanjusansho (The Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage), made by 'Yasukuni Joza' in the status of Bushi (Samurai) in Bungo area, Oita Prefecture.

A large shinto shrine constructed in the style based on the Grand Shrine of Ise. This type of construction for small shrines is often used by the local residents in Ise. A pair of miniature wood sculpture of Ebisu and Daikoku which are two of the Japanese Seven Dieties believed to bring good luck. Ebisu is a diety of fishery which brings plentiful catch and Daikoku is a diety of agriculture which brings good harvest. Both are in excellent condition with an original wood box. 20th century.
