Japanese framed print signed by artist known as Ay-O 靉嘔(1931-present). His full name is Takao Iijim, a prominent member of the Fluxus artist movement since its beginning.

Fluxus is described "the most radical and experimental art movement of the sixties".

Ay-O represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1966 and at the São Paulo Biennale in 1971. He also built the famed "Tactile Rainbow" at the Osaka World's Fair in 1970...

Eight paintings on paper illustrating some excerpts from The Chronicle of the Heike (1968), a historical novel by the Japanese writer Eiji Yoshikawa (1892-1962). He describes with great realism, the accession to power of the Heike clan warriors or Taira particularly his struggles with the Genji clan or Minnamoto.

Kai Seihyo was trained at the Tokyo University of Fine Arts. It was later in Seihyo's life where the artist began producing unique historical subjects and received high acclaim where Seihyo was known for his paintings of samurai and horses. Large Japanese early Meiji period sumi ink on paper scroll by calligrapher Ito Keishu (aka Ito Shinpei), who was active circa 1870s to 1890s. Signed and with three red seals. Paper mount and wood scroll ends. The scroll measures 79” x 32 1/2" (painting size: 54 1/2" x 26”). Good intact condition with some rubbing and soiling evident. There is a small distressed area or repair to the paper mid-way down the scroll on the right side (see enlargement)...

Ink and polychromy on silk. Charming kakemono of a musician on horseback holding her samisen. A child holds out a side of her richly decorated kimono. Courtesans seem to relax. One with a fan has lost her sandal (zori) while the other 2 are preparing to enjoy a tea. A poem at the top of the painting describes the scene. It is signed by 2 stamps which can attribute this painting to Kitagawa Fujimaro (1760-1850). Dimensions of the painting: H112 x W45.5cm.
