A wonderful boxwood carved netsuke of five turtles climbing on top of each other. Intricate details can be seen throughout, creating a very realistic form. Each turtle has little black eyes. Early 19th Century Japanese Wood Netsuke: ACROBAT

This is a finely hand carved, Early 19th Century Wood Netsuke depicting an Acrobat, who is wearing a fundoshi and sports an Eboshi hat on his head, demonstrating his contortionist skills by placing his left leg over the back of his head.

Very nice carving with great, glossy patina. Unsigned. It measures 1.60 inches (4.0cm) wide, and 1.58 inches (4.0cm) tall. It is in excellent condition, as shown in the posted photos...

This is a finely hand-carved netsuke in Kurogaki (Black Persimmon) wood of a Lotus Seed Pod, made as a Karakuri or 'trick' Netsuke in that the seeds rattle and peep out of the seed holes. Netsuke was carved by an unknown artist from the Iwami Province sometime during the Early 19th centuries. The carving exhibits similar material and carving characteristics of a netsuke (Photo #6) made by Seiyodo Gansui (1809-1848)...

A large Japanese sashi netsuke carved from stag antler, depicting the mythical Chinese fisherman Ashinaga with his long legs. The face is carved very expressively and the natural himotoshi (cord hole) is running through his curled hair. Condition: nice patina. Dimension: 17.8 cm long.

A fine and expressive carved stag horn netsuke of Shoki, The Demon Queller. Early 19th century.

Shoki is the Japanese styling of the Chinese spirit Chung Kui who protects households from malevolent demons. In this example the gifted carver shows Shoki studying closely, an off stage, mischievous oni whilst carefully hiding his Chinese sword close to his body.

The netsuké represents the immortal Taoist Gama Sennin seated on a rock, his staff in his hand, at his feet his three-legged toad stretches affectionately towards him, trying to climb him. The artist sculpted his subject in a walrus tooth, the typical crystallization of dentin is visible under the base, in the center, the artist has partially hidden this crystallization by drilling multiple holes, simulating the defects of the rock, which are of the best effect...
