The design of this mirror has not entirely escaped the conventions of earlier Kagami-e (Long handled Mirrors) of the late Muromachi –Momoyama era, which are essentially mirrors of conventional round form retaining a central boss to which a handle has been attached. In this example the Cranes are arranged directly opposite each other, their beaks meeting with that of the kame, to create a T form; a convention that appears in the late 16th century...

An Early Japanese Bronze Mirror, Kagami, Circa 1600. (No.1) This bronze mirror (kagami) was almost certainly made in the Momoyama period. It has a turtle (minogame) as a central boss, pierced for a cord. It also features a pair of cranes, their beaks touching the head of the turtle as in the act of kissing. This beneath a splendid pine tree. Under the turtle is found the inscription 'Tenjō' (?) possibly meaning Heaven.

Approximately 10.4cm diameter...

A mirror made of copper with wood stand which is one of "Sanshu-no-Jingi", the Three Imperial Regalia. In ancient time, all natural objects and phenomena were worshipped in Shinto, but three items such as mirror, jewel and sword are objects to be worshipped later. A mirror is often put in the shrine pavilion these days. This mirror is rather small, so it might have been put in a house shrine. In excellent condition with molded auspicious design with a crane, a turtle, pine trees and bamboos...

Well cast Japanese Edo period round-form bronze kagami (mirror) decorated in relief with a motif of cranes among pines. The perforated central boss, which is designed to hold a tassel, is in the form of a minogame (tortoise). Two cranes reach toward each other with their beaks to kiss the head of the tortoise. Marked "Tenka" (all under Heaven) at the lower right. This decorative motif has been attributed to the Momoyama period (16th/17th century)...

The censer in the form of a woven basket with a domed open-work lid, suitable for the transportation of avian livestock especially the Gallus domesticus. The base with the mark Seimin chu (cast). Meiji period.

The censer comes with the original box with inscriptions on the lid and front panel, alongside a paper label.

Approximately 6.7 cm by 6.7 cm, 9 cm high. Perfect condition with only a little wear to the patina from use. This is exaggerated by my lighting...

A bronze mirror, wakyo, decorated with a classic Autumn pattern that evolved in the Heian period which features a pair of birds, sparrows, water weeds, ashi, water, and a wave washed sandy beach, suhama. The design is cut by a single ring. The design of the inverted pistil boss and the density of the design, horror vacui, dates the mirror to the late Kamakura period 1275-1325. Japanese Edo to Meiji period bronze mirror (kagami) with handle, decorated in relief with palm leaves and flowers. Inscribed with the Fujiwara Shigeyoshi maker’s mark. Measures 8 1/8” long x 5 3/4" diameter. 19th century. Very good overall condition. There is a tiny nick at the bottom of the handle. From the Sahuarita, Arizona collection of former expatriates to Okinawa in the 1970s. Stand not included.

A high quality crisply cast Japanese mirror. The reverse of the mirror decorated in high relief with a conventionalised representation of the utopian Isle of the Immortals typical of the Edo period integrating into the design the auspicious Takasago twin branched pine tree with a pair of flying cranes and a Minogame in the left hand corner. All set against a crisp granular ground. Probably late Edo period, or possibly slightly earlier...
