Edo Period Early 19th Century Japanese Gold Lacquered Box. An extraordinary master work inspired by the Rimpa style of Ogata Korin. This stunning box features a pair of Peacocks by a stream with auspicious Flowers and Butterflies rendered in high relief of gold lacquer and accents of mother of pearl. This is one of the more intriguing lacquer objects we have owned. Adorned with maki-e Aoe (hollyhock) Ka-mon on nashiji ground (also known as the Kamo Aoi as it was sacred to the Kamo shrine), family crest for prominent daimyo families including the Tokugawa and the Matsudaira during the Momoyama and Edo periods. Even the drawer pull is fashioned as an open worked shibuichi Aoe Ka-mon with the surprise of a textured, kinko (soft metal) raised backing only if you look for it...

Small gold lacquer tray, magnificent example of kirikane and multiple lacquer technical and multiple lacquering techniques. Absolutely exceptional quality, very rarely encountered. Presence of small details in mother of pearl. I think it must have been part of a set, most probably inside a box? But it is possible that it was created alone. Perfect state of conservation. Difficult to date exactly, I would say around 1800. Dimensions 105x80mm.

Tebako (cosmetic box) with black and nashiji background, decorated with several mon (family crest). Each side of this rectangular box is divided into two registers, separated by a diagonal golden maki-e flash. The black lacquer interior features a tray.

Among the mon is that of the Mizuno clan, which is said to be descended from the Seiwa Genji branch of the Minamoto clan. During the Edo period it counted several vassals (fudai daimyo) serving the Tokugawa shogunate...

19th Century Japanese Gold Makie Lacquer Kobako Kogo Box with Horse

The box is 0.63 inch (1.6 cm) tall by 2.3 inches (5.85 cm) in length and 2.2 inches (5.5 cm) wide. It is 13 gram.

It has small chips, peeling of lacquer, hairline crack, stains, rubbing of lacquer and gold and surfaces wears and scratches (as seen in the photos).
