Three fine 20th century Japanese lacquer trays. Each with boats and pine decoration in gold tones upon a dark brown ground. The trays gradually bowed and of square shape but with slightly curved sides and raised on four, shaped feet. 11 1/16" x 11 1/8" (about 28cm square). Reasonably good condition with some light abrading easily enough cared for by a specialist.

Mother of pearl is inset into the silver powder dusted lattice set between red lacquered pillars forming this art-deco era lacquer vase enclosed in the original signed wooden box by Iwamura Sadao (1912-1944). A brass insert which rests perfectly between the four corners allows for flowers. The strong geometric patterning embodies the Art Deco style so popular in Japan in the 1930s. A beautiful Japanese black lacquer over wood with applied mother of pearl charger featuring 2 sparrow-like birds surrounded by cherry blossoms. The branches have gold highlights and the cherry blossom buds have red lacquer accents. One small mop bud is missing, otherwise in very good condition. Measures 17 inches in diameter.

A lacquer box decorated with a Rimpa style thatched house under blossoming tree by Kamisaka Sekka dating from the late Taisho period. It is 12.5 x 12.5 x 6 cm (5 x 5 x 2 inches) and is in excellent condition. An incredible amount of work went in to the burl-like lacquer finish of this early 20th century three-drawered calligraphy box. All surfaces excepting the bottom are covered in the unusual mottled finish known as wakasa, made by spattering on layers of various colored lacquers which are then rubbed down to a smooth, marbleized finish.
