Antique Japanese fubako, box for holding letters. Made of lacquered wood with a design of young pine and blossoming plum branches. Both box and lid are decorated in maki-e gold and silver lacquer over a delicate nashiji on a black lacquer ground. The interior has clouds of dense gold nashiji and two mon on the underside of the lid.

Age: Edo Period (18th/19th century)

19th Century Japanese Makie Lacquer Wood Carved Box

The box is 2.8 inches (7.2 cm) tall by 3.4 inches (8.75 cm) in length and 10.8 inches (27.5 cm) wide. It is 306.6 gram.

It is tarnished and has small chips, peeling of lacquer, cracks, stains, rubbing of lacquer and gold and surfaces wears and scratches (as seen in the photos).

Koi frolic, splashing gold and silver waves as they leap and battle for the top of this stacking food dish dating from the later 19th century. The design is striking! Outside is polished black loaded down with gold and silver maki-e with applied kirigane cut gold squares. Inside is festive red. The box (assembled) is 25 x 23 x 38 cm (10 x 9 x 15 inches). Some minor dings but overall, very nice condition for something which has seen use.
