Gorgeous Japanese lacquer box with allover gilt lacquer designs over black lacquer backgrounds with gold flakes. The front has two drawers with a crane flying beside a pine tree in lacquer. The top opens into two compartments with hinged lids decorated with a phoenix and a cherry tree. Panels of floral scenes with lucky motifs decorate the sides. Signed tomobako included. In remarkable original condition, the gold lacquer decor represents the culmination of techniques for using gold leaf, gyobu nashiji, kirikane, kinji for a decor that continues from the inside of the room. door to the other door in continuity on the drawers. Originally for storage of tea ceremony utensils or cosmetics as gifts from wealthy aristocrats. Original lacquered box with inscription. Meiji period late 19th century. Rare lacquer box with nashiji background. Gold lacquer decoration in relief of pavilions in a lake landscape. Kirikane gold and silver, pine needles in yellow metal inlaid in high relief blackened by oxidation and dirt. Early Edo period, late 17°or earlier. Inside there is a tray. 18 x 10 x 8cm. A broken and badly glued interior edge (visible on photo). Sold as is, never restored nor cleaned. No lack. Very good condition considering the venerable age.

Antique Japanese lacquer suzuribako decorated with a pair of deer in raden (shell inlay) and lead on a black lacquer ground. The box opens to reveal a writing set including a lacquered copper rectangular water dropper, an ink stone with brush rests on either side against a background of black lacquer with Rinpa style gold maki-e designs of curling plant fronds.

The last work by this important artist, a five piece stacking box decorated in iconic Dragonflies by Okada Yuji enclosed in a custom made wooden storage box. Creatures congregate among the fallen leaves and small grasses surrounding this incredible Kanshitsu (dry lacquer) box by Okada Yuji enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yafu (Field Wind). A plethora of techniques have been used to create this box. First the dry lacquer technique means perhaps a year in creating the egg-like shape, due to drying time of the many layers. A sumptuous design of white flowers among dark leaves on a cream-colored dry lacquer form by Okada Yuji exhibited at the Kyoto Kogeikai Kaiten in 2020. It is performed in multiple layers, first the form of dry lacquer, which entails a great amount of time in creation, layer upon layer of lacquer, cloth, paper and Tonoko powder. An incredible amount of work went in to the burl-like lacquer finish of this early 20th century three-drawered calligraphy box. All surfaces excepting the bottom are covered in the unusual mottled finish known as wakasa, made by spattering on layers of various colored lacquers which are then rubbed down to a smooth, marbleized finish. Just when one thinks the artist has finished, the process is repeated. This small piece of furniture is the finest example of this technique we have come across...
