$800.00 Japanese gyosho bako or "peddler's box"/ship box, made of kiri and sugi wood, with iron hardware, handle on top, front door with a pin locking mechanism, which opens to reveal four rectangular drawers and two locking compartments, each with iron handle. Edo period (1603-1867)

SOLD Antique Japanese gyosho bako, or merchant's box, with iron rings and a smoothed carved indentation on one side so that it may be carried comfortably on a person's back. It has an interesting signature branded on its front door, and its side has the branded mark of a trio of leaves. The front door locks closed, and opens with a kan (ring) pull to an interior with four long drawers. Kanji seal, Edo Age c1800.

$1,250.00 Antique Japanese small gyosho bako (merchant safe box) made of Kiri (paulownia) wood in original red lacquer finish and black lacquer frame. Old working key included to unlock the front door to reach two drawers within. The top has raised edges with iron braced holes to securely carry the box.

SOLD Antique Japanese 3 drawer gyosho bako or merchant's box, with original red lacquer finish. The top of the box has a carrying handle and the 3 drawers are opened by hirute shape iron pulls with square locks and corner hardware.

SOLD An antique Gyosho Bako (peddlar's chest) with the original dark brown lacquer. The chest has 4 drawers in the top section. Three of the drawers have iron hardware locks. The bottom section has one hinged locked door with 3 small drawers hidden behind it. Two of the drawers have iron locks. The original loops on both sides are for the rope the peddlar uses to carry the chest.

SOLD An antique Japanese 2 section Gifu Choba (Merchant ) Tansu made of Keyaki (Zelkova) and Quarter Sawn Hinoki (Cypress) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware and a beautiful age acquired patina. Unique and rare visual striations in the frame intentionally produced by the quarter sawn cut of the wood. Her robe is navy blue with a turquoise obi, with intricate auspicious symbols accented by red. A low hanging maple branch with fall colored leaves and mushrooms hangs above her head. Splashes of gold flecking surround her. The opposite side of the door has been painted with a wonderful scene of boats and mountains...

SOLD An antique pair of Japanese Fusuma doors made of Hinoki (Cypress) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Natural Urushi lacquer frame and hand painted design of Bamboo trees on one side and Pine trees with Bamboo on the opposite side.
Bamboo symbolized tenacity and perseverance while the Pine tree represented a long life making these doors auspicious and full of good luck.
Age: Meiji Period (1880-1890) Dimensions: Each 35 1/2" Wide by 71 1/2" High.
