An antique Japanese Okidoko (low display stand) made of Keyaki (Zelkova) wood. Used in a Tokonoma as a portable display stand atop which decorations like scrolls were hung or flower arrangements were displayed. Drawers were used to store items for display and the interior shelves were used to display seasonal items. All original bronze hardware.

An antique Japanese Kotansu (document chest) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood. All original hand forged iron hardware including the unusual side carrying handles which when swiveled up, allowed a wooden pole through it allowing two persons to transport it. Straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nail construction.

An antique Japanese 1 section Nihon Matsu Tansu made of lacquered Keyaki (Zelkova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. All original hand forged iron hardware including the Gumbai style handles and the Peony with Leaves lock plate. 2 large drawers provides abundant linen or textile storage. Originally used in Japan to store silk kimonos.

Antique Japanese small ko tansu (chest for personal storage). Made all of kiri (paulownia) wood. The chest has sliding panels on the top portion which open two a single compartment. Below this is a row of 3 small drawers over two full-width drawers. Hardware is made of cast iron.

Very rare and unusual travel tansu with a black lacquered wooden frame and lacquered wicker front and sides, with two large hinged doors in its front. Antique Japanese trunk with a deep red toned wood , iron handles on its sides, one large and one small drawer at its bottom with iron lockplates, and a large pierced iron lockplate on the lid, very roomy inside. Edo age (1615-1867) SIze: 25" height, 33.25" width, 16.25" depth

Antique Japanese trunk made of kiri (paulownia) wood with a deep red finish, bordered in black lacquer. Two iron handles are at its sides, a gourd-shaped iron lock decorates the front. The blonde interior has been marked with kanji. Edo age (1615-1867) Size: 22" height, 34" width, 15.5" depth

Antique Japanese half section Mizuya (kitchen tansu) made of Hinoki (cedar) and Sugi (cypress) hardwoods in a dark lacquer finish. The tansu has two sliding front doors with horizontal slats and side bracing, with very roomy storage interior complete with middle shelf.

Antique Japanese small tansu from the Sakata region, with original red lacquer top and sides and black lacquer front. The top drawer's iron lock plate is incised with the image of a flying crane and pine branches; The bottom drawer's lock is incised with an ancient turtle with many tails. An unusual vintage Japanese Choa tansu with Keyaki burl front hardwood panels. The chest is decorated with highly ornate floral motifs and filigree seen through the iron plating and hardware. Each drawer and compartment has a black lacquered interior. The tansu has side handles for transport. dates from Showa c1950

Unusual Japanese Kiri wood stacking box, comprised of 9 shallow compartments for the storage of calligraphy implements. The edges of each compartment are reinforced with hand-forged iron plates. The lowermost compartment has a single pull out drawer with a kakute iron pull and lock.

An antique Japanese Edo era Ko Tansu (personal storage chest) made entirely of Kirinoki (Paulownia) wood. All original finish and hand made iron fittings. Made with straight dovetail joinery and hardened wooden nails. Original used to store daily documents, ephemera, small utilitarian accessories and personal items. Present day uses include using it as a small side table or a bedside nightstand.

Antique Japanese low Todana tansu with one large drawer and a compartment opened with sliding panels. Mostly made of Sakuranoki (Cherry) wood, the sliders have horizontal slats over Keyaki (Zelkova) wood panels. As well, the side panels of the tansu are also made of Keyaki. The sides and back of the tansu are reinforced with sakura wood bracing. Hardware includes iron Warabite drawer pulls and lock on sliding panels...
