Very large Samurai doll from the late Showa period with beautiful brocade costumes. This is a hero or musha ningyo doll for Boy’s Day (May 5th) in Japan. Some dolls are made to depict a hero or warriors from the past. This doll is a quite impressive size of 22” in height without the hat and 15” in width

The three sitting dolls are 3 1/4 inches and the two standing dolls are 4 inches in height.

An amazing bit of weaving has been performed on this modern bamboo basket made in the shape of a gardener’s vegetable collecting basket. The long body has tall sides, open at one end, and is signed underneath Tosho. It has been formed of two shades of thinly cut bamboo, susutake and aged yellow take. Japanese Kimekomi hina ningyo (dolls), Dairi bina, emperor and empress doll. Kimekomi dolls were originally carved out of willow trees growing on the riverbank of the Kamo River in Kyoto. A beautiful Suiseki mounted on rich red carved wood base enclosed in a custom made kiri-wood display box. There is a sublime balance between the ragged peaks and deep clefts in the stone, and excellent example of the Renzan (Range) type of stone. The stone is 37 x 10 x 12 cm (15 x 4 x 5 inches) and is in excellent condition. There is one very small nick in the wooden base (1/8th of an inch or 3 mm in size). Japanese plaster and paper mache mask of a Boddhisattva (Bosatsu in Japanese), a Buddhist monk who has reached a high level of enlightenment. The mask has long earlobes, typical of a holy being in Buddhism, green lacquered hair pulled into two buns, and golden lacquer skin with traces of black lacquer. Early 20th century. Lovely Japanese Hira Taiko Drum, made from a light hardwood, and hung from a Hiratsuri stand. The drum has iron studding to keep its drum skins in place and gold kanji/kana on a black metal strip, with a gold taiko logo for Maru Masa. A drumstick is included which hangs off a hook from the Hiratsuri stand. Makes a lovely drum sound as it is intact and in good condition. Vintage Japanese conch shell horn, known as a horagai or a jinkai depending on its usage. The horagai has been used in Buddhist practice for over one thousand years.
