$100.00 Tatougami which was used at the pawnshop for wrapping pawned items. The name of the shop is "koyama Shichi-ten" and it has the shop's logo "小" in the square. It is a few layers of old washi (handmade paper) pasted together and painted with kakishibu (persimmon tannin) for strength and waterproof. Shichiya (pawn shop) appeared in Kamakura period and developed much in Edo period. 19th century. 32cm x 81cm

$40.00 4 pieces of Nara Uchiwa whose history dates back to Nara period (A.D.710~794). It began as manual side line work of the Shinto priest of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. The traditional motifs (Tenpyo Moyo) such as peonix, deer, kylin (imaginary animal), dragon, Parrot etc. These four (originally five) were made by Ikeda Gankodo which is only existing maker of it in Nara. Sold, Thank you An amazing bit of weaving has been performed on this modern bamboo basket made in the shape of a gardener’s vegetable collecting basket. The long body has tall sides, open at one end, and is signed underneath Tosho. It has been formed of two shades of thinly cut bamboo, susutake and aged yellow take. Susutake is taken from the roofs of traditional houses, highly prized as it takes many years to color, being stained slowely by smoke and soot from the hearth fire...
