Glass ball on a wooden stand of finely carved and undercut work. The base has been carved in the shape of high foaming waves in which fishes are swimming, and that carry the jewel of the tides. The waves inlaid with little pieces of mother-of-pearl and gold lacquer. Ryujin, the Dragon King, held this jewel to rule the tides. Overall height 7 ¼ inches. Japan, Meiji period. Ball in near-perfect condition (one tiny, shallow scratch), the stand with some repairs and some missing tips on the waves...

An absolutely breathtaking set of two carved and gilded three tiered wooden stands in the form of blossoming lotus enclosed in the original kiri-wood box dating from the Meiji period. They stand 14 inches (35.5 cm) to the top flower, with each red-lacquered tier over three inches ((8 cm) in diameter. 13 individual fronds rise up to blossoms and leaves, each exquisitely carved and covered in gold lacquer over black. Despite the delicate appearance the stands are very stable...

A very fine carved bamboo okimono, depicting a saint or deity whose ear is being cleaned by a small boy. Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912. H. 5 cm. Good condition, nice patina. The piece has some written monograms of a former owner. From a Dutch private collection.

Carved to fit the hand perfectly, this Japanese ivory page turner offers elegant design combined with function. The artists skill becomes even more evident when the page turner is held. In excellent condition save for one small shallow chip about 2-3 mm, see last photo, very hard to see, but can be felt if you run your finger slowly along the blade. An impressive magnifying glass with a carved ivory handle with 18 natural red coral beads. We believe the ivory handle to be a Meiji period Japanese parasol handle and sometime in its history converted to a magnifying glass. In very good antique condition with all beads intact, the handle measures 5 inches x 1 1/8". Magnifying glass with handle is 10.5 inches long.
