Chinese hand scroll portraying a hunting scene attributed to, Jin Tingbiao (~1767). Four hunters with four horses are gathered in this scene either preparing a hunting party or finishing one. Views of hunting, known as shoulie wenwutu were first seen from the Yuan dynasty and succeeding dynasties continued to paint various renditions. Comes in a beautifully carved box. A Chinese couplet scroll in calligraphy excerpting from a work composed by the noted literati scholar, Su Dongpo from the Song Dynasty. Work contains the signature and seal of Zheng Xiaoxu (1860-1938).The two line couplet expresses how as there are different ways to point out the errors in an embroidered robe, or a crane hesitating to fly has yet to mature into an immortal. A small porcelain iron red overglaze water coup decorated with dragons set among scrolling clouds. The iron red style was developed in the Ming dynasty and in the Qing various styles were expanded. Additionally, with the continuity of the literati tradition, various objects were being produced and one was the water coup which is essential in producing ink for calligraphy. The water coup contains an inscription reading Da qing xiangfeng nian xin. (1851-1861). Size: height 2.25" diameter 2.8"

A refined Chinese framed landscape painting showing a view during the evening. The tradition began during the Song Dynasty with literati landscapes. In the succeeding centuries, different artists produced these landscapes echoing poems by Li Bai or Guqin tunes. The landscape painting was done by an artist named, Tzuyue. An interesting square porcelain brush pot with a long inscription of the Chu Shi Biao composed by the 3rd century strategist, Zhuge Liang. The inscription makes the argument that the state of Shu Han must fight against Cao Wei. The calligrapher at the end signs and dates the piece: The 23rd Year of Kangxi, (inscribed by) Wen Fang. Wonderful Chinese antique scholar rock, horizontal formation with cave like holes worn in between layers, top layer is a flat plateau, on custom wooden base that has been carved to fit the stone exactly, early 20th century. Total size with stand: 8" high x 17 1/4" long x 7" deep.

DESCRIPTION: A handsome scholar's calligraphy brush, crafted from a wood shaft that has been beautifully lacquered in a swirling, wave-like pattern of red and black lacquer. The lacquer shaft is connected to the natural bristle brush by a bulbous wood ferrule. One of the four treasures of the scholar’s studio, this striking scholar’s brush would have made an attractive companion to a fine brush pot.
