A lidded container in a divided, compressed form of finely, carved bamboo root. Good luck bringing Bats (bianfu) carved in relief decorate the sides and lid. Bottom with a la grec pattern. Mid Qing, around 1800. H 10 cm, W 8.2 cm. Condition: Very good. Traces of wear. One short crack on the middle part of the bottom panel filled.

A large wooden Christian cross with beautiful lotus and vines decoration inlaid in engraved mother of pearl, originating from Macau, Vietnam or Southern China. Rearside with paper label. Chinese bamboo caving of Shoulao, the deity of longevity. He is sometimes referred to as the Old Man of the South Pole. His attributes include his large forehead, representing wisdom, and his long beard to show longevity. Shou Lao also holds a long staff and a peach branch to also symbolize a long and prosperous life. Shoulao is carved with a small boy riding a deer, who holds a magic box from which a bat flies out (an auspicious motif) and a crane.
