Large Chinese Han Dynasty Painted Pottery Figure (horse rider)

This unusual pottery figure was made during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 8) and would once have sat on the back of a large horse. It is quite "heavily-potted" and made from a reddish-brown pottery. It has been "cold painted" in a base coat of creamy-white on top of which have been applied black, red and pink pigments. There is good detail to the clothing and the hairstyle, but note especially the smiling face!

An historically important work by Furutani Hiromu (Churoku I) from the initial firing of their newly established Nobori-gama climbing kiln in 1974. This type of work is called Hatsugama, or first from the kiln. It is the only piece in the show from the climbing kiln (which has not been fired in over 20 years) and the earliest piece in the show as well. This piece I feel goes very well with the Tokkuri just listed, a guinomi showcasing the soft tones of the Shigaraki clay with its inclusions and imperfections, a smattering of ash inside spilling like sake over the rim in green, white and gray. It is by Furutani Taketoshi and comes enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Shizen-yu Guinomi. It is 6.5 cm (2-1/2 inches) diameter, 4.5 cm (just under 2 inches) tall and in excellent condition, directly from the artist.
