19th Century Japanese Boxwood Carved Netsuke of a Naked Man Holding Rock

It is 1.2 inches (3.2 cm) tall and wide. It is 8.2 gram.

It has a small chip at the toe, missing signature cartouche at the bottom, and surface wears and scratches (as seen in the photos).

A Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting a Shishi in a defense posture with jaws wide open and carved with an excellent finish and craftsmanship in the smallest details, accompanied by a blond color and an extraordinary patina and luster. Kara-shishi 唐獅子 (Chinese lion) resembling a lion. It is typically placed to the left of the shrine or temple door. Edo period XIX century Sizes: 3,5 x 3,7 x 2,3 cm. Condition report: Good condition

Four finely carved wooden (maybe sandalwood) masks with lacquering and most with glass bead eyes. Showing different types of theatre masks as Hannya, Oni etc. Condition: minor rim frits, the Hannya mask with few lacquer losses. Dimension: c. 5.1 cm long x c. 3.5 cm wide.

Joli petit okimono en bois sculpté en forme d'enfant jouant du tambour. Sa robe est finement incrustée de motif de fleurs stylisées de différent matériaux, argent, os teinté, corne ou ébène et nacre. Dessous 2 caractères gravés sur une tablette de nacre indiquent le nom de l'artiste qui est certainement célèbre au regard de la qualité de l'oeuvre. Il manque quelques perles et les baguettes de tambours, mais celà ne nuit point à l'équilibre de la sculpture...

It depicts a kneeling man appearing to take a brake from carrying a giant fish. Signed in seal form. Netsuke is stained in tan color. It measures 1.0 inches (2.5cm) wide, 1.75 inches (4.5cm) tall, and 1.5 inches (4.0cm) in length...

A Japanese boxwood netsuke depicting Shojo crouched in a typical posture, with his hand resting on his knee, while sleeping from the effects of too much sake, the kimono is finely carved with geometric motifs as well as the long hair on the back. Similar examples of the Nagoya carvers are illustrated in Meinertzhagen, MCI, p.844, Davey, MTH, p.189, no.570 and Lazarnick, NIA, p. .1063. Edo period 19th century Sizes: 3,3 x 2,7 x 2,6 cm. Netsuké in wood by Kokeï A rabbit with its small forming netsuké carved in cherry wood by Kokei. There is no the two hole, the himotoshi is naturally formed by a leg. Unlike most netsuké bearing Kokei's signature which are fakes or plagiarisms, this one is from the artist, indeed the quality is excellent. Everything is good, the volumes, the precision of the carving, the expression of the animals and the feeling of life. The signature is under a back tab. Japan early 19th century...

A boxwood netsuke of a toad on a wooden container. Excellent fineness of the details to simulate the grain of the wood and the toad skin. Meiji period 19th century Sizes: 3,3 x 2,5 x 2,6 cm. Condition report: Good condition

Tenuki is depicted standing, his head covered by his huge scrotum. It is carved in a wood that seems to me to be cherry. The sculpture is simple and vigorous. The netsuké is ideally compact in shape. The patina of the wood is very old and beautiful. There is a 2 characters signature which I have not translated but can do on request. It is probably a well-known artist. I think beginning of 19°, but maybe before. Height: 55mm Very worn.

The immortal is powerfully carved in wood, probably cherry. Gama Sennin holds his stick in his hand and his toad on his shoulder. He is unusually tall. The sculpture is powerful, the folds of the dress are elegant and the expression is serene. Although Gama-Sennin is attested male there are rare examples of its female representation. The softness of the features make me think that this would be a woman...

Wooden netsuke of the demon Oni hiding in a foot warmer (anka) in order to protect himself from the bean seeds that are thrown at him. The beans are represented by two inlaid stones. His right arm stands out, a part of his head is visible through a small hole in the foot warmer.

The Setsubun festival came from China it is introduced in Japan around the 8th century. Its celebrates the arrival of spring...

The falcon is represented resting on a branch. His expression is attentive and we can guess that he is hunting. The artist knew how to infuse him with all the ruthless savagery in his gaze. It is signed by Haru Mitsu. It is finely carved in wood, probably cherry,the pupils inlaid in black horn.I remember having read that this artist liked to exaggerate certain parts of the body of his subjects, here it is clear that the claws, eyes and beak are strongly exaggerated...
