SOTOMIYA

Miniature version of Japanese outdoor wooden shrine called 'sotomiya' (as the opposite type of interior household shrine called 'kamidana'), Showa period, 20th century, approx. H 26.2 x W 18.5 x D 18.8 cm (10.31 x 7.28 x 7.40in). Some damage as is as seen. No object enshrined (since this little snake is not attached), so that please arrange something worshiped into by yourself...

A large mask in the form of the face of an oni (demon) that typically would hang in the kitchen or in a temple, to ward off evil spirits. A slit in the back is for hanging the mask from the wall.

Wood with remnants of polychrome pigments red, white and grayish black.

Japan, late Edo period (18th/19th century).

Biku, fishing basket, used by a fisherman in rivers. It is made of bamboo strips and urushi painted. It has a cord made of bast fiber. Some spaces between bamboo strips, but no break. in good condition. The first half of the 20th century. H:24cm, W:22cm

Boro hanten noragi made of cotton with stripes and plain which are vegetable indigo dye. It has two layers of cloth and sashiko all over. The shape of sleeves is "makisode. The frist half images are inside out. The first half of the 20th century. 128cm x 87cm

Basket handmade of Yama-budo, wild grapevine which grows deep in the mountains. It is used by a mountain worker as a backpack. Generally in good condition but has a few minor breaks. The first half of the 20th century. W:43cm x 28cm x 15cm.

BLACK OBJECTS

Set of a single kanji character of wooden signboard as 'Matsu' (Pine tree) and a miniture big tree made of burnt natural branch of tree as an applied form of Japanese tea ceremonial conception called 'Mitate' (A point of view as "Sees things as different things, not as they should be"). Lovely Negoro lacquer'Yuto' water pot from the Meiji Period, Ca.1900. Natural cylindrical body carved out of cypress wood and flush fitting cover all with beautiful negoro lacquer finish.
