A mid Edo period carved woodn mask for Shishi-mai festival dance covered in red and black lacquer with gilded teath and eyes in rarely seen good condition. The mask is used with the hand, not worn over the head, the dancer usually hidden beneath a long flowing cape. It is 22 x 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 x 9 inches) excluding the horn and ears. There is an old metal plate nailed over one hinged jaw inside (not visible from outside), where the wood had likely once given way...

Very rare and unusual wood tiled village shrine from Dema - mura village in Mie Province. Dated the year of the tiger C.1818 the shrine houses gods and happiness. Signed on the back with the date and maker, Fujiwara Shokichi. Cypress wood with a bronze lock on the doors to the inner chamber. Japanese pair of hardwood pulleys, carved out of Keyaki (elm) wood with hand-forged iron hooks and hardware. Two wooden wheels on the inside are built to support a rope. Each pulley is branded with a signature on both sides.
