The metal clasp works well, which is antique handmade with boat motif. Generally in good condition but has some indigo faded spots and wear in one of the corners in the bottom. 4 pieces of Nara Uchiwa whose history dates back to Nara period (A.D.710~794). It began as manual side line work of the Shinto priest of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara. The traditional motifs (Tenpyo Moyo) such as peonix, deer, kylin (imaginary animal), dragon, Parrot etc. These four (originally five) were made by Ikeda Gankodo which is only existing maker of it in Nara. An amazing bit of weaving has been performed on this modern bamboo basket made in the shape of a gardener’s vegetable collecting basket. The long body has tall sides, open at one end, and is signed underneath Tosho. It has been formed of two shades of thinly cut bamboo, susutake and aged yellow take. Susutake is taken from the roofs of traditional houses, highly prized as it takes many years to color, being stained slowely by smoke and soot from the hearth fire...

Set for carrying lunch. Bamboo and rattan basketry box lined with green brocade, the outside with an intricate diamond pattern woven in two colors, the corners fortified with leather. Dangling from one of the brass handles is a natural gourd with silver stopper and a lacquer sake cup, imitating Tamba stoneware. Japan, Meiji era, early 20th century.
