Antique Chinese stone head of a Bodhisattva. Eyes are down cast and expression is compassionate. Up swept hair and tall crown decorated with a central floral. Likely carved of limestone. With a custom metal base.

Age Qi dynasty 2nd to 5th century.

Chinese Grey Sand Stone Mortar with high relief raised Peach decoration outside, 4 1/2" high, 8" diameter on top, round shape mortar with hexagonal shape base. Couple of small stone pieces are chipped from the base.

An authentic marble stele fragment depicting an Apsara, measuring 4-3/4" in height by 3-1/2" in width. The carving is very well done and the details are crisp. The surface retains its original patina. A very fine example, mounted on a custom stand (the base of the sculpture has been drilled with a hole to accommodate the shaft). Statuette of a Chinese deity, probably Guan-yin. It is carved from a block of light beige, nuanced soapstone. She holds a basket in her hand which contains a fish. The facial expression indicates an old style prior to the 20th century. It is a sculpture from the Qing period, probably from the 19th century, but perhaps earlier. Antique Chinese pair of stone temple fu dogs. These fierce guardians would have been placed on either side of the entrance to a Buddhist temple in order to ward off evil spirits. One statue has its mouth open and the other mouth is closed, a symbolic trait to represent the in-and-out breathing of life and the sound of “om.” Heavy in weight.

The head is carved in a grey stone that I think is limestone, it is harder than marble but it can be scratched with a steel tool. The naive sculpture seems to be made by a craftsman who was not a sculptor or a sculptor of a primitive people. It unquestionably represents a Buddha with his third eye in the middle of his forehead. There is some red pigment left in one nostril and in the corner of the mouth.The appearance of the stone seems very old...
