The Kura
Sold, Thank you A Stunning combination of works by mother and son Koyama Kiyoko (1936-present) and Koyama Kenichi (1961-1992), both in the original signed wooden boxes. The Tokkuri, by Kiyoko, is of bulbous form decorated with slips of green glaze used sparingly around the neck. The terracotta body is fired to a deep amber on one side, the bright orange clay indicative of Shigaraki showing through on the other. Original Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Koson (1877-1945), depicting a bird flying past a pine tree under the light of a full moon. Published by Kokkeido. Although undated, it is circa 1910.
The image measures 13 3/4 by 7 1/4 inches. The print is in very good condition, with wonderfully fresh colors, although the margins, if any (typically they appear on only two sides of the prints from this era), have been trimmed. Original Japanese woodblock print by Ohara Koson (1877-1945), titled Two Mallards in Flight. Although undated, it is circa 1910. The design was published by Nishinomiya Yosaku and is is illustrated at plate K7.8 in Cranes, Crows and Camellias: The Natural World of Ohara Koson.
The image measures 13 ½ by 7 ½ inches, plus full margins. Excellent condition, except the tip of top left margin corner is missing. Japanese woodblock print by Elizabeth Keith (1887-1956), titled Lama Temple, Peking, 1922. The image measures 9 3/8 x 14 1/4 inches, plus margins. No condition problems to note.
The design is illustrated in “Elizabeth Keith: The Printed Works”, by Richard Miles. According to Miles, the blocks for this print were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923.
