Rare antique large Thai “parang”, used to cut and split rattan and bamboo etc to create everything from baskets, village house walls to fish traps. The handle is made of old, and nowadays rare, Thai Rosewood: Dalbergia cochinchinensis. The cutting edge is still sharp and usable, there are a couple of splits which is secured by a metal band. Lovely old Burmese lacquer box with a finely woven lattice work insert lid (I assume to keep the flies off your “tiffin”). Circa 5-80 years old, it is very thin and lightweight and the body is constructed of bamboo. Excellent original condition with minor lacquer loss at the bottom’s edge as to be expected from a genuinely old piece. D: 30.5cm/12in and H: 16cm/6.2in.

Fine and rare 19th century, 2 paneled, ceremonial men’s “bell” cape (khing ta zhi) from the Southern Chin ethnic group in Burma- this piece would have been worn during religious and planting festivals. This is unique, in being woven with nettle fiber rather than cotton. The weaving is quite delicate and complicated; I put a single grain of rice to highlight the intricate and minute details of the blue and red alternating points. The bells come mainly from India and have a very sweet sound...

Exceptionally rare small storage jar with typical Burmese style floral scrolls under a green tin based glaze. Probably originally from the Mon, Pegu (Bago) kiln. The inside of the jar is glazed in a cream colored glaze and presumably the decoration is done in the same glaze under the green. H: 28cm/11in and D: 22cm/8.6in.
