An exquisite lacquered box containing three drawers behind a locking door covered in black lacquer with fine maki-e designs of feathers and featuring solid silver hardware. Inside the door the sun rises behind clouds of gold powder. It is 13.5 x 9.2 x 9.8 cm (5-1/2 x 3-3/4 x 4 inches) and is in excellent condition, protected in a fine kiri-wood box.

A very unusual brush case in the shape of a sword dating from the 19th century. It seems to be a play on the expression “the pen is mightier than the sword”. A part of the sheath slides to the side revealing a compartment for wadding drenched in ink and a brush. It is 39 cm (15-1/2inches) long and in excellent condition.

The box is made of Urushi lacquer with a relief decoration of a phoenix (phoenix) in gold powder on a roiro (black) background. Details are in red lacquer, gold mosaic (kirikane), and mother-of-pearl (aogai). Japan, Meiji-Taisho period, early 20th century. Good condition, with a few minor losses to the edges, visible in the photos. The interior is lined with aventurine (nashiji). No restoration. 245mm x 100mm.
