Chinese Tang Dynasty Painted Pottery Zodiac Figure (Tiger)

This pottery "zodiac figure" was made during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 906). It is in the form of a robed official figure, hands held together across the chest, with the head of a tiger. It is made from a reddish-brown pottery that has been cold-painted in a creamy-white pigment with pink pigment on top around the head.

Gold dragons prance about the vermillion surface of this exquisite vessel by important Meiji potter Eiraku Zengoro XIV (Tokuzen) enclosed in the original signed wooden box which is in turn enclosed in an outer box also annotated by a later generation Eiraku. An organic form slabbed and hollowed out from a block of clay by revolutionary Hagi artist Kaneta Masanao enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hagi Kurinuki Tokkuri. This is a superbly well carved jade piece dating, I believe, most probably to the Song dynasty, circa 1100AD, although possibly a tad later. The jade is a grayish-green nephrite and is truly the work of a highly accomplished artist. It measures some 3" in length and is 2" in height (7.5cm X 5cm). 1/4" in depth (1mm). A real beauty! The introductory page is written by Zen priest Hashimoto Dokuzan of Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto. The paintings are each signed with various names used by Kimura, mostly Seiun or Ren.
