A tea bowl or maybe, rather, a wine bowl. The front with the combined crest of two families from the rural nobility, one is symbolized by a harrow, the other by a bunch of grapes. The back with the intertwined initials of the families joined together in marriage, surrounded by vines and grapes. China, mid or late 18th century. Diameter "3¼/ 8 cm, height "1¾/ 4,5 cm. Condition: a very small glaze flake to the mouth rim.

This is Yogi used in a rich merchant's family of Akita for Edo period. This is drawn in good-quality Tsutsugaki. As for this, a Chinese phoenix drawn boldly is very impressive. It is very elegant. As for this, cotton is spun by hand and is thick. As for this, cotton cloth of the lining is dyed into deep green. Good-quality Tsutsugaki often uses it to lining. Irregularly shaped cylindrical chaire. Tea caddy used in the tea ceremony during the colder months. Dark brown or black glaze with one thick splash of yellow and green glaze. Footring. Raku style. Japan, 17th/18th century.

H 3¾ inches

Firing crack at lip, several old gold lacquer repairs at lip and foot and bottom, all in all fine condition

This probably was a drinking cup (mukozuke) originally and was converted into a tea caddy at some point.
