DESCRIPTION: An attractive antique Chinese stoneware jar with wide body and outward turning rim, hand crafted with a pleasing celadon glaze over a raised border of circular designs. In original firing condition and dating from the early 20th C. Though the origin is Chinese, this crock would lend a nice touch of "country" in a cottage or farmhouse setting. Good woman’s skirt panel or apron from a Yunnan ethnic minority, approximately 50 to 70 years old. All the elements in this piece are hand made, even the ribbon along the border which is often machine made (even in old pieces). The beads along the edge are made of seeds. Three cups and saucer trays by Noritake, Japan, mid 50’s. Saucers shaped like water lily leaves – a modernist design also reminding of the painter’s palette shape so much in vogue in the 50’s in ceramics, jewelry, teak wood and more. The cups to fit at one side, in order to allow for a sandwich or some biscuits. The back with the N and ribbon mark in use from 1953. Width of saucers "9 ½ / 24 cm, height of cups "2 2/3 / 6.8 cm. A beautifully carved and gilt boxwood figure of Guan Yin / Guanyin. The goddess is holding the holy Buddhist scripture and has placed her hand between the open pages. China, Republic period, c 1920. The surface of the carving is covered with a thin layer of red that mixes with the gilt. The figure can be fixed to an oval wooden stand. Height (the stand not included) "4 ¾ / 12.3 cm. A small Guanyin / Guan Yin, moving graciously with ribbons and a fan, her hairdo with flowers and jewels. Chinese, early Republic period or somewhat earlier, carved in greenish speckled soapstone and fixed onto a rhombic hardstone stand. Height altogether "4 ¾ / 12 cm. Rare woman’s skirt (pukhang) from the Kachin/Jingpo ethnic group, Northeast Burma. This is two panels with supplementary weft trim on the ends made of dog hair. Mostly natural dye and indigo. It is quite a durable weave with denim like feel. There is some staining, one small hole as well as a bit of dye bleeding. I could only find examples this in “Textiles of the Hill Tribes of Burma”: Michael C. Howard (plate 107) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Accession Number: 2002.312...

Rare black Lanna lacquer box circa 70 to 90 years old in excellent condition given its age, no repairs or big chunk missing, from Chiang Mai. Genuine old examples of Thai lacquer are quite rare these days as most have been bought up by Thai collectors. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and D: 11cm/4.2in.
