Chinese : Carvings : Horn : Pre 1900 item #752067 (stock #TC207)
Asian Ethnic Artifacts
$175.00
Made from ox horn, and shaped into a perfectly balanced shoehorn, this antique Chinese folk art artifact serves in both form and function. There is a delicately carved design on the back. The handle part of the horn has eyes carved so that the piece takes the shape of an animal and there is a hole carved so that the shoehorn can be hung from a cord. I vaguely remember hearing that the Chinese inventing the shoehorn, but have not been able to verify this as historic fact.

Large by Western standards, this is actually the "childs" size version of this foo dog necklace worn by the Chinese Miao minority 70-90 years ago. Made of low grade silver, typical of Chinese jewelry of the time period, the intricate pendant is 5.5 inches across, 6.5 inches long and suspended from a long hand-made chain. The heads of the foo dogs are in a pin which allows them to turn freely and the central "flower" is also suspended on a wire which allows it to spin.

Because the Japanese used a minimum of furniture and usually sat on the floor, frequently an arm rest, kyosoku, was used either singly or in pairs. This simple wooden Meiji period arm rest would have been appreciated for both its form and finish. The wood was first burned with hot coals and then scrapped with the result that the softer sections of wood would be carved out more deeply. This process would leave the "wavy" sculptural pattern on the surface of the wood.

23 inches long a...

$450.00
A very beautifully rendered Japanese treasure ship with intricate details that are just amazing, this large cast iron antique is lacquered with the 'old red' traditional lacquer that can only be found on your older Japanese antiques. Its function is rare as it doubles up as a censer, fine slit holes are found in the front and backsides of the sail, allowing a fine mist of smoke to create an allusion that the ship is sailing through a fog. This ship measures 14" high x 11" long x 6" wide and we...
