The female part (明妃）of a Tibetan gilt statue of Nandikesvara (歡喜佛）. 19th century or earlier. Condition: gilt lost. We noticed that there are two layers of gilt remained: the original one is glossier, and the later layer is not as glossy, and a good part of them are gone now. Dimensions: 4-1/2"w, 4"h.

The title does not lie, this is one against which all others might be measured. A celebratory sake set consisting of three cups and a stand enclosed in their original lacquered wooden boxes. This pair of painted portraits depicts the newlywed Justice Minister Choi Seok-min (1858-1915) and his wife. The level of photo-like realism in these paintings is astounding. 19th Century portraits of women are exceedingly scarce. This is the only example we have ever seen offered for sale. This is the only ancient Korean mace ever offered for sale. The few existing examples are all in museums in Korea. It is from the Early Joseon Dynasty, 16th Century or earlier.
