Very rare late 19th century small lacquer box with a bird in concentric circles on both concave top and bottoms unusual simple geometric designs on the side. A very rare large gilded Royal Thayo receptacle created in Mandalay for Buddhist votive use. Thayo is made by mixing lacquer with sifted paddy husks to which pulverized bone is added for strength, resulting in a sort of plastic like material easily molded or stamped in a relief design. A set of rare and complete Burmese manuscript (KAMMAVACA) made from thick cloth coated with gold and lacquer in nice condition. It was written in the Pali language using Burmese script. The square letters were written in thick and black cinnabar lacquer. This set has 16 leaves and 2 wooden covers made from teak wood. Each leave was inscribed on both sides with illustrations of deity figures from Hindu-Buddhist mythology on some leaves...

Burmese lacquered harp, or Saung, the body carved with gilt floral motifs and inlaid glass. The tip of the curved neck ends in a stylized gilt leaf with inlaid glass. The 14-stringed instrument sits displayed on a carved wood stand with temple guardians and lotuses.

A elegant lacquerware for monastery use. Made in Kyaukka, in the lower Chindwin District in Burma, made from woven matting and coiled bamboo and lacquered in black and red. Exceptionally rare early 20th century small, complete betel box with za-yun pattern, emulating English embroidery stitching. There are some cracks on the lacquer surface as well minor losses on the edge (especially on the inner box) all visible in enlargements. Two rare Burmese/Shan small betel containers, 60 to 100 years old with “ku-nan kan byat” patterns and original inner trays. Genuine antique Burmese lacquer is almost impossible to find these days; I picked the larger one up in a small shop Luang Prabang, Laos in 1998. H: 8.7cm/3.4in and W: 10.2cm/4in, and the smaller one, H: 6.7cm/2.7in and D: 7.7cm/3in, in Chiang Mai this year. These have some old repairs, as well as a pleasing craclature typical of antique Burmese lacquer.
