Size 6cm in height 14cm in width Condition No damage Supplied with old shifuku bag and box labeled "Joseon Dynasty Mishima Chawan" Aesthetically perfect in imperfection, this Ido chawan made by Korean potter Seon Gil Seo (b. 1910).
Ido chawan, also known as Ido tea bowl or Ido-style tea bowl, is a type of ceramic tea bowl used in the Japanese tea ceremony. It is named after the Ido kilns, which were located in the Mino region of Japan during the Momoyama period (late 16th century)... This attractively-shaped stoneware bottle was made during the 13th / 14th century. It has a wide round body, a short narrow neck and a cup-shaped mouth. The surface is coated in a finely-crackled olive-green glaze, the colour varying in places according to its thickness. In places where the glaze is particularly thin, it has degraded a little over time and flaked from the surface. Height 20 cm (8 inches)...

This "heavily-potted" bowl with a high foot was made in 19th century, during the late Joseon (Choson) Dynasty (AD 1392 - 1910). It is coated all over in a pale grey glaze, that seems to have just the slightest hint of blue in places. Embedded in the glaze around the foot rim are many pieces of kiln grit. Around the foot ring there is a considerable amount of kiln grit embedded within the glaze, a feature often seen on ware of this type from this period...

The jar measures, with lid, about 9 3/4" high x 8 1/2" in diameter, and the mouth opening is 3 5/8" across. The lid appears to be original to the Jar. The Jar is in good condition. There are several chips on the underside of the lid, and around the mouth, and there is a 1/4" kiln crack on the mouth...
