Beautiful antique Japanese temple scroll from the Edo period (1615 -1867). The Buddha has left his physical being and attained enlightenment. After one of his close followers prepares a bed under the sal trees for him, the buddha dies. All the beings of the earth, good, evil, divine, and animal mourn his departure. The buddha is painted in gold leaf. Sumie ink and mineral colors. Provenance: from a Montclair, California estate. It measures 46" wide by 94" long.

A 19th Century Isho Ningyo set of two Geisha entertainers, one a Koto Player, the other the highest ranking Orian singing. They are of the finest quality. They have beautifully carved faces and hands, and wear gorgeous, sumptuous brocades with fantastic embroidery. The Orian has fine embroidery of a carp ascending a waterfall, a crane, and turtles on waves. The Koto Player has embroidery of cherry blossoms and patterns of gold threads. The Koto is made of paloma wood, teak, and ivory...

Japanese Meiji Period painted poloma wood door (sugido). Ink and pigment on a natural wood ground, depicting a peacock perched on a flowering cherry tree, signed/sealed Sho[ryo], the reverse with scattered cherry petals floating near a flowering dandelion plant. 18th Century Japanese Two Panel painted Screen of a Pine Tree and Landscape, set in gold painted clouds floating in the image. An exceptional classic Japanese masterpiece. The presence of this image changes with the light of the room. The painting techniques are sumptuous, giving the image a heightened realistic experience. A formal Japanese maru obi with auspicious designs; containers for an old shell matching game, hand drums, fans, ho-o Chinese phoenix bird and kiri leaves. It is made with a thick silk brocade and thick padding. The gold color (genuine gold) is particularly beautiful in this obi. Excellent condition. This is the most formal and elaborate style of obi called maru obi. The designs run through the entire obi from one end to the other on both sides. The dimensions: 12" wide x 12'5"(161") long. The cost of making one maru obi is substantially higher than a typical obi. The design here include chrysanthemums, wild flowering plants of autumn, fans and Genji wheel that implies the presence of graceful aristocrats from the Heian period(794-1185)...

An incredible Japanese antique Kanazawa kaidan staircase, with hand quartered sawn keyaki drawer fronts and black sliding door framework. Mixture of sliding compartments and pullout drawers. Attached original hand rail that is very unusual. Stunning original lacquered reddish orange coloration. Overall the chest is in excellent original condition with everything working just as it should.

Wonderful antique Japanese okimono of the mythical characters Ashinaga and Tenaga. The two friends live on the beach and survive on fish. Tenaga catches them with his long arms while sitting on the back of Ashinaga who wades out into the water with his long legs. Carved with great detail and whimsy out of boxwood. Meiji Period (1868-1912). Size: 14 1/4" high x 4 3/4" wide

This is an old Japanese silk obi. The style of the obi is called Chu-ya (day and night) obi – it’s made with two different fabrics sewn together. As the name suggests, two sides of the obi can be worn for totally different social functions. Both sides are absolutely beautiful on this obi.

The front side of this obi is subtle but quite tasteful...

Japanese woodblock print triptych of swimming turtles and fish with actor mons and human faces by Yoshu Chikanobu (1838-1912) dated 5th month of Meiji 19 (1886). The convention of disguising portraits of actors arose in the Edo period when bust portraits of actors were banned, through the Tempo Reforms of 1841-1843, for being conspicuous and a detriment to public morality.
