A discreet masterpiece are words which could easily describe this gorgeous chunk of antique burled vine root carved and polished to a subtle sheen in the shape of a two tiered vase inset with bamboo pots. The piece rises from pebbly textured burl, abundant with character, like a clay pot which collapsed during firing. The second level appears to float above the first on tendrils of smoke. A startling effect. This piece truly captures the Japanese sense of respect for the natural world...

A wooden sign of three golden characters carved into the surface of a solid slab of burled wood enclosed in a frame expertly carved with the four gentlemen, plum, bamboo, iris and chrysanthemum. It reads Yuraku-sai, A Place of Playful Enjoyment. The sign (with frame) is 11-1/4 x 21 inches (28.5 x 53 cm). It is signed Setsuyo (?) followed by two stamps. There is a chip into a hollow in the wooden plaque, lower left (see photos) otherwise is in excellent condition...

Extraordinary and more than one hundred year old water jar Mizusashi. It is signed by an unknown artist on the bottom.

This Bizen ware Mizusashi has a breathtaking shape and very good yellowish natural glaze called Goma. Great!

Mizusashi are containers of fresh water for replenishing the pot and rinsing bowls in the tea ceremony.

No chips or cracks, heavy weight 2,2 kg. Size: 5.5'' height, 7.92'' width.

A pair of "Ashimoto andon (foot lantern) made of cedar board, bamboo and washi (Japanese hand-made paper). The paper is replaced from shoji-gami (white paper for paper screen) to recycled washi which was a record book of a merchant in late Edo period. Inside is matte-black with patches of gold gilding, while outside the silhouettes of pines and a soaring Hototogisu (cuckoo) are deftly brushed with shiny black lacquer. Antique Japanese small cha tansu (tea chest). Made with chestnut wood frame and burled hardwood drawer fronts. Two slider panels and a drop in panel are covered with gold-leafed silk on wood. The center of the chest has a small display area with a staggered shelf and two small drawers. The lower portion of the chest has three small drawers and a full-width drawer on the bottom.

Age: Taisho Period (1912-1926)
