$950.00 Japanese painting circa 1880 of two warriors carrying torches titled "Soga Turo Sukenari and Soga Goro Tokimasa", based on the 13th century tale in which two brothers avenge their deceased father during the Gen Pei wars. It is set in a gorgeous carved woodblock frame. Artist name Yoshitoshi, part of his Historical Series. Dates from the late 19th century.

Beautifully painted in mineral colors and ink on paper. Each painting has a signature and seal. Intended for scrolls. Taisho Period (early 20th century).

Sold, with thanks! This Toba-e E-maki appears to be a 19th century Gi-ga follower of the later 18th to early 19th century Osaka "Manga-ka" Nichosai (Matsudaira Heisaburo). His humorous images of Hell were quite popular, known as Kakuyu painting. Overall the genre has many names, Gi-ga being all encompassing, Toba-e being descriptive of this particular style, and Kakuyu-fu being the style of Nichosai.
