A touch of genius is found in the depiction of the smallest mushroom, which is placed upside down above the larger one's head. From this small cavity emerges a delicate caterpillar carved from blond horn. Engraved signature Masatomo 正友. Period: Edo 19th century Dimensions: 2.4 x 4.2 x 3.6 cm. State of conservation: Excellent condition - There are natural openings in the wood.

It is attached to a stylish leather pouch with a clasp of mixed metal beans. Some damages on lacquer. Late Edo/Meiji period. *Ajiro is a woven wickerwork made out of strips of bamboo skin, cypress bark or Japanese reed.

Japanese hanging tobacco pipe set consisting of a wooden pipe holder and a wood tobacco box in the form of the 2 mythical fishermen Ashinaga (Long Legs) and Tenaga (Long Arms). Tenaga's face lifts and functions as a cover for the tobacco box which still has much of the original tobacco inside. Ashinaga, the elongated standing figure is the pipe holder which also serves as a scoop. In excellent condition except for the ojime (sliding ball) which is missing most of it's lacquer...

An unusual decorative wooden sword (tea room sword) carved of hardwood in the shape of a dried fish signed on the belly pierced and wrapped with a faded silk chord. An excellent example of the genre it is 13-1/2 inches (34 cm) long and in fine condition.
It is said that these wooden swords were produced from the mid to late Edo period, in lieu of swords for those not allowed to carry weapons (all but samurai)...

Provenance: Collection of Hendrik Jan Karsten (1817-1908), a Dutch politician. There is a name label at the back of the netsuke. Very striking piece, comes with a museum quality stand.

Pipecase of the otoshizutsu form carved out of stag antler with a décor in low relief of a tiger crouching on a rock with sprigs of bamboo surrounding the rock. Surrounding the himotoshi is more bamboo. Unsigned. Japan, 19th century.

Worn with old damages in thinner areas of the stag horn and small hole approximately where the pipe head would be, further scraped off with a knife.

Whimsical antique Japanese netsuke of two octopi in embrace, carved in beautiful cherry amber with lots of little details. The Japanese would wear small stacked containers called inro from their belts or sash. Inro boxes were held together by a long cord running down its sides that looped at the top, held together by a netsuke bead and an ojime bead. The cord would run through the two holes featured on this netsuke. 19th century Size: 1.5" tall x 1.5" wide
