A two drawer Japanese box done in a kinji or gold background with fine paintings of pine and flowers with a family crest set in the open areas of the piece. The box has metal fittings for the drawers and a handle to carry the chest. Often lacquer works with family crests were made for dowries for high ranking samurai families. Something I have never seen before, a set of pillows for one couple from Shimabara, one of the oldest pleasure districts of Kyoto, enclosed in the original Kiri-wood storage box. The man’s pillow is a simple roundel of soft leather. The woman’s, made for a geisha and her elaborate coiffure, is a small tapering black lacquered box with a drawer for a hair pin, to the top of which is secured a brocade pillow with a silk chord...

Lovely black lacquer Japanese vase with 2 crickets. On the back side is a red dot (2 gold dots are on the front), a very interesting and subtle design element. Note in the photos, there is some minor chipping around base. Measures: 8.5" high, 4.25" across shoulder.

Japanese red lacquer on wood and brocaded Silk Obi Fabric top Folding Stand, 17 1/2" high, 18" wide, 14 1/2" deep-maximum(when opened), and 24" high, 14 1/2" deep(when closed), later part of Meiji period early 1900's, silk fabric has no open seam, all one(1) piece of silk Obi fabric, woven for this stand when it was made. The eight(8) metal caps have impressed design. There are some dull lacquer area from the usage but no damage.

Distressed Japanese Iki mask with crystal eyes. Gofun finish over dry lacquer composition. Details including veins, wrinkles and furrows. The surface is in a distressed state with significant losses and some 'alligatored' texture possibly from exposure to elements. Would make a worthy conservation project for someone with the patience to recoat and touch up losses (the missing left ear being most challenging.) Length, about 9 1/4 inches (23.49 cm)

A elegant and luxurious cigarette set by Ikkakusai, Nagata Tomijiro. The work is a combination of silver, woven strips of wood, and lacquer. The exterior section of the lid has two fan shaped silver plates insets with traditional motifs of bamboo, lingzhi (reishi), and the sage jurojin. The box has a metal and glass ash tray, a compartment for a lighter, and below a drawer for extra cigarettes. Cigarettes became popular in Japan during the Taisho and early Showa Periods...

Eight lobed inlayed Japanese lacquered dish. Each lobe is decorated in makie, the flora and fauna of the four seasons with archaic designs set in between. The central area of the dish is depicting a female figure holding a lotus with a child attendant holding a bouquet of lotuses. The bottom is crafted in the nashiji style with a signature set in a medallion motif reading: Kaneko Zo, or Produced by Kaneko. Age: Meiji Period Size: Diameter 8.25" Height 1.5"
