Very original and refined Japanese box (kobako) in the shape of two fans joined together. The floral decoration with a profusion of flowers, chrysanthemums in their foliage, lotus flowers... in gold lacquer, nashiji, hirame, gold powder... The sides in gold and silver togidashi lacquer near a stream which corrugated. The edges are in shibuishi. Edo period 19th century. H5 x L15 cm.

Daikoku‘s hammer, symbol of power and abundance, capable of granting wishes, made of lacquer and embellished with gold leaf. The decorative motifs on the hammer are floral and geometric and create a harmonious design. Period: Meiji end of 19th century. Dimensions: 16.5 x 7.5 x 7 cm. Conservation status: Excellent condition. There is some lack of gold leaf.

A breathtaking box covered entirely in gold with geese taking flight beyond blossoming plum trees overhanging the waters edge. The flowers are in red and silver, the rest of the surface is powdered gold with kirigane inlay of cut squares of gold intimating lichen and shadow on the stones. The themes are repeated on all sides of the box. Inside fans emblazoned with seasonal flowers and pine boughs decorate the Nashiji surface...

A lacquered writing box in the shape of a kimono sleeve (sode) covered in soaring silver and gold geese among autumn reeds and Togidashi clouds with a secondary (inner) sleeve shape covered in Karakusa vine tendrils on black enclosed in an age darkened kiri wood box. The inside is covered entirely in nashiji gold powder, and contains a grinding stone, and a water dropper of copper inset into the tray...

Antique Japanese multi tired chest with single double hinged central compartment. All sides are decorated with circular gold lacquered bamboo, camilas, peony scene interspersed with the gold Tokugawa Shogunate family crest. Condition is consistent with age and does show wear. Very sturdy and is 100% complete. Ready to be enjoyed for many more years to come.

A pair of lovely lacquered antique Japanese Hibachis (braziers) using a refined Kamakurabori technique. Featuring Chrysanthemums (Kiku) and Paulownia (Kiri) flowers and leaves with a bronze insert. Originally used as hand warmers during the cold of winter, they make elegant flower pots for plants and Ikebana flower arrangements.

Inro with 4 squares decorated with Toba riding his mule, on the reverse a rooster under a bamboo. Toba, the rooster and the bamboo are inlaid with mother-of-pearl and lacquered with gold powder on a background of red lacquer in slight relief. The mule is inlaid with pewter. Ryoshibako document box in black and gold lacquer decorated in takamaki-e and hiramaki-e. In the center of the panel stands an imposing castle, immersed in a natural landscape dominated by Matsu pines. Nashiji lacquer forms a cloud-like texture adding a touch of depth...

The outside of this elegantly understated container is simply semitransparent red lacquer over cloth in the Tame-nuri style opening to reveal an interior glowing with large patches of applied gold and silver. It is 20.5 cm (8 inches) square, 10 cm (4 inches) tall and in overall excellent condition, with minor marks from use on the bottom. Inside the box is contained a number of papers as well as a receipt from the late Meiji period, circa 1910.

A fabulous cabinet covered in polished black lacquer inlayed with mother of pearl designs in the style of Nagasaki containing various boxes, trays and dishes for an outing. To allow any steam to escape, it has windows which were once lined with silk. Brass hardware secures the hinged doors which swing out with small boxes and trays in one side, a square sake bottle with brass spout encased in a wooden stand on the other...

A set of two incense items carved from blocks of dried lacquer, the surfaces polished to reveal the various layers and colors of lacquer used in a mottled pattern. Truly quite spectacular despite their diminutive size, the koro is 10 x 6 x 7.5 cm (4 x 2-1/4 x 3 inches), the kogo is 4 cm (1-1/2 inches) diameter and both are in excellent condition.

An incredible lacquered screen decorated with a Bugaku Dancer wearing an angry devil mask opposing a snake in incredibly thick relief opposite three gentlemen heating sake over a fire under the changing leaves of a maple, their oxcart off to the side. An inlaid cartouche near the snake reads Kan. The two-sided panel is set into a frame with matt black iron texture over a raw kiri-wood panel inset with three windows...

Cedar wooden ryoshibako (or bunko) document box, decorated with deer and crane on the outer lid and bat on the inner lid in takamaki-e lacquer...

Antique Japanese Shō, mouth organ (flute) used in Gagaku (classical performances traditionally for the imperial court). A musician blows through the silver lined protruding mouthpiece. The air travels through the bamboo tubes creating notes (said to sound like the Ho bird or phoenix). Skillful musicians are able to blow air in and out of the mouth pieces creating sustained, uninterrupted notes.
The arrangement of bamboo tubes are said to resemble the folded wings of the phoenix...

Antique Japanese set of five lotus leaves and blossoms. Carved of wood and lacquered silver. Made for a Buddhist altar, these leaves and blossoms symbolize the stages of the path toward enlightenment. Every petal of the lotus flower is carved separately. Each blossom and leaf comes fitted with a custom metal stand so they can be rearranged at will.
