The Japanese Norimono Palanquin is completely covered in a rich chestnut woven bamboo. The roof has a slight curve and a section of the roof can lift up for entry. The sedan is trimmed in black lacquered wood in a double lined grid pattern contrasting with the woven material. This is one of the more intriguing lacquer objects we have owned. Adorned with maki-e Aoe (hollyhock) Ka-mon on nashiji ground (also known as the Kamo Aoi as it was sacred to the Kamo shrine), family crest for prominent daimyo families including the Tokugawa and the Matsudaira during the Momoyama and Edo periods. This is an old Japanese towel rack, sometimes called a children’s kimono stand. The metal work is in traditional style and the mounts have been used on many different kinds of lacquer pieces throughout the Edo period. The chrysanthemum mons (family crests) on each end of the mount, were used by the Emperor, royal princes and others outside the Imperial family, in a variety of forms. Decorated with gold hiramaki-e and nashiji lacquer techniques depicting pines, prunus and grasses in rocky landscape. The prunus blossoms rendered in oxidized silver haku-e with gold details. An elaborately decorated lacquered sword stand. The stand is made into a small chest with three drawers. A small metel bound six drawer black lacquered cabinet finely painted in gold lacquer . Three drawers are decorated with a branch of flowering prunus blossom and the large drawer and door are each painted with a single duck amongst reeds and iris. Condition: very good - there is some age wear to the decoraration on the top, sides and back but the gold lacquer painting on the front is in excellent condition...

Exceptionally elegant red vermillion lacquered zen buddhist temple sutra table in its original signed and dated box. Dated Keio gannen 8 (c.1865) the tapered legs and metal fittings on the table top indicate this was made for a rich temple. 37cm tall and 53cm wide the very top is in its own cotton wrapping. An antique Japanese rare 2 section Butsudan (Buddhist Altar) hand made with elaborate Makie lacquerwork. Upper section has two large hinged doors decorated with a blooming Peony tree. The interior of the doors each feature a Buddhist diety, one holding a mushroom scepter with a Baku at his feet and the other studying a horizontal scroll with a Shishi (Foo dog) at his feet. Below the doors are three small drawers where Buddhist accoutrements were stored. The interior was lacquered in gold.
