An antique Japanese Chobako (merchant safe-keep box) made entirely of Kiri (Paulownia) wood with original hand forged iron hardware. Acquired a beautiful 200+ year old age patina. Hinged door secures 3 drawers behind which lies a secret box located behind the side by side drawers above.

Unusual side footing purposely made to provide air flow under the box...

Two(2) Japanese Black Wrought Iron heavy weight solid Tansu Chest Hardware or Drawer Handles, 2 different sizes, Larger handle with carved pierced Back plate(7" wide, 1 1/8" high=outer measurement, and original nail and hole(4 1/4" wide). Smaller handle only without back plate(5" wide outer maximum measurement, 3" wide(inner top measurement), 1 5/8" high maximum height.

Japanese Two(2) pieces U shape heavy Black Wrought Iron Side Locks, 9" high, 3 1/2" wide(maximum outer measurement, 8 3/4" high, 3" wide, (inner measurement), 1/2" thick, Pin(2 1/2" deep), this set looks like two(2) divided area to put through heavy wood Rod for both sides and carry on two(2) men's shoulder, one in front and one in the back, with original attached heavy duty Iron nails or pins.

Jûbako picnic box made of paulownia wood and shaped like a paulownia flower. It is composed of three compartments with the interior in red lacquer.

With its original box with several inscriptions, included the datation "- 2nd year of Kaei era", namely 1848

This striking black and gold Japanese antique shop sign is from a Meiji Era (1868 - 1912) headquarters for a drug store chain. It dramatically declares that this shop carries the best elixirs for vitality, the best remedies for high blood pressure, and the most expedient cures for fever. 17.5 x 41 inches (44.5 x 104 cm). Excellent Condition.

Because the Japanese used a minimum of furniture and usually sat on the floor, frequently an arm rest, kyosoku, was used either singly or in pairs. This simple wooden Meiji period arm rest would have been appreciated for both its form and finish. The wood was first burned with hot coals and then scrapped with the result that the softer sections of wood would be carved out more deeply. This process would leave the "wavy" sculptural pattern on the surface of the wood...

Antique Japanese box with large lid, lacquered red and black with shell inlay, black lacquer mon of pine tree and writing in black, heavy iron hardware, has holes for tying top to bottom for travel. The inscription on both sides state the name of the confectioner. Trans.: Confectioners Matsuzaka Asano Rokkado. Late Edo Period- Meiji Period (late 19th century). A pair of hirobuta or trays used to place kimonos in, made from Cherry bark and paulownia. The style of using cherry bark to produce various objects is a distinct style seen in the Akita- Kaunodate region, where they are famous for the art. One piece contains a motif of deer and autumn grasses, while the other is a woman preparing silk fabric while staring at the moon...

An antique money box or zenibako made out of keyaki wood. The front panel detaches and back side of the board may have been used to test the brush before writing notes and documents. The bottom side of the box contains an inscription possibly the location of where the box was placed. Interestingly, on the front of the box next to the lock is a traditional logo carved on the panel. The logo is often used by merchants and often seen on door curtains to storehouses in the Edo Period...

Japanese Pine store Display shelf with one(1) drawer, Ca. Meiji, Ca. 1880, 15 1/2" high, 24" wide, 7" deep, the drawer has brass handle, and cut out shaped side panels. The condition is good.
