A Japanese porcelain plate decorated with a dignitary beneath a parasol, attended by his servant, in a garden. The cavetto is unusually decorated with a continuous landscape, a device not often encountered on Arita porcelain. The use of linear shading is reminiscent of Chinese “Master of the Rocks” style. The back is entirely plain with four spur marks within the foot-rim. Arita, circa 1680~1700.

A Japanese Export heart-shaped dish with an European harbour scene by Frederik Van Frytom. Arita 1680 ~ 1700. Frederik Van Frytom was a notable painter in 17th century Holland who was commissioned to produce Delft pottery samples for copying at Arita. This dish is a copy of one of a special set of five Delft dishes that were taken to Japan in 1684 and used in the tea ceremony. The moulded shape of the dish is reminiscent of silver tableware...

A Japanese Arita Export porcelain spoon tray after a design by Frederik Van Frytom. Within the foot-rim is found an eccentrically written apocryphal Chinese reign mark, a feature seemingly of most wares the with Van Frytom designs. The shape is taken from an European silver dish and the porcelain clearly intended to be exported to the West.

A spoon tray of this design was included in a Christie’s auction in 2009.

A large Imari bowl with a scalloped foliate rim made for the European market decorated to the exterior with a wide diaper brocade band incorporating a cross motif and Karahana. The cross in this context probably represents “sen”, one thousand, and combined with the karahana represents an auspicious wish for a long life...

A good quality large Japanese Imari bowl made for the European market decorated with a cobalt blue ground inset with a scrolling arabesque of Peonies in a highly stylised manner. This is a beautiful Japanese porcelain teapot. It has been Meticulously hand painted and the quality is similar to that found with Hirado, Makuzu Kozan or the best Fukagawa pieces. It meaures 8 inches across and is 7 inches tall. Condition is excellent.

A very fine and unusual square plate. Arita 1790 - 1820. This fits into a group of porcelains that more accurately could be called ’white and blue’ produced at the end of the 18th century and beyond. This plate features exotic figures and an elephant. See the Shibata Collection, item 3831, for an octagonal plate of similar design.

Japanese early 20th century Sumidagawa large pitcher. The pitcher is done with 3 monkeys done in high relief. The chop mark of the artist in on the back Inouye Ryosai. The vase measures 12 3/16" tall and 6 1/4" wide and about 4 5/8" in diameter.

A very unusual covered urn made to hold fresh water for the tea ceremony of pristine white clay splashed with rivulets of emerald Seihakuji glaze by Tokuda Junko (Yasokichi IV) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seihakuji-yu Mizusashi dating from 2003. A spectacular pair of vases by Ito Tozan I decorated with the imperial chrysanthemum in gold between soaring phoenix; symbols of the Japanese imperial family. Both come in the original (tired) silk pouch in a compartmentalized wooden box signed by the artist. Each is roughly 6 inches tall and in excellent condition, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (later Meiji to Taisho period)...

Finely detailed Satsuma jar with 4 male figures comprising 2 scenes. One scene depicts Shoki with a nobleman, the other a Samurai teacher with his student. An exceptional piece and what we were not able to capture in the photos is the depth and richness of the translucent glazes. Wood stand and lid were added later and are included. Measures on stand with lid 9.5". Jar alone measures 7.5" high x 6" diameter. Jar dates about 1875.

This burnished finish is one of the signature effects of Living National Treasure Yamamoto Toshu seen on this fluted gourd enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Bizen-yaki Hyotan Hanaike. A nice quality Arita porcelain bowl decorated with a design of four panels of Hosoge or Karahana, Tang Flowers, in contrasting Iron red and under-glaze blue. A bowl or cup of unusual Klapmuts form with an angled everted rim decorated in under-glaze blue with Auntumn grasses, akikusa. Shards of identical cups have been excavated from the Okawachi kiln site and dated to the late Edo period and the first half of the Nineteenth century.
