Fairly large zushi hand shrine in the shape of a lotus petal. Double sided, made of sandalwood.
Inside each half is a deep relief carving of Buddhist deities. On one side the three-eyed Aizen Myoo with a lion crown, sitting on a lotus base in the clouds before a red mandorla. His six hands hold Vajra and ghanta, bow and arrow, and lotus bud and pouch. On the other side the two-armed Kannon bosatsu, holding a lotus bud in the left hand, sitting on a lotus base in the clouds...

Original large antique Japanese jizai, used for suspending a kettle over a fire to boil water. Made of solid Keyaki (elm) wood, carved in a hooked style, and topped with an iron hook for hanging.

Unusual Japanese wood carving of a figure, appearing to be a foreign man, who wields an axe head. The figure is seated, kneeling upon a jagged throne. The patina of the carving shows remnants of old lacquer.

A very large pair of hardwood transom / temple architectural elements, elaborately carved with charming motifs of squirrels eating from grape vines. The carvings are deeply recessed with raised outside edges of a scrolling form. Realistic grape vines and leaves continue along the underside of each transom. Very heavy. Japanese antique transom made of keyaki (elm) wood and carved with a scene of Ushiwaka and Benkei battling on Gojo Bridge in Kyoto. The young samurai, Yoshitsune (also known as Ushiwaka-maru) is depicted in an acrobatic pose, leaping over Benkei, the giant wild-man who was intent on stealing Ushiwaka's sword. Another samurai is carved below them, his much smaller form suggesting he is far below the action...

Japanese antique transom made of keyaki (elm) wood and carved with scenes of samurai warriors. On the left hand side, a general gives orders to his troops (small figures carved in the round) partially behind a camp curtain. On the right hand side, another samurai rides a battle horse and raises his weapon high over his head. All around them are pine branches and swirling mist.

Antique Japanese pair of boxwood okimono Nio. The Nio are guardians to Buddhist temples, and enforcers of physical confrontation to fight back against evil. Nio are typically placed on either side of a temple door. One statue, named Misshaku Kongo or Agyo, has an open mouth to represent the first sound in the Sanskrit language "a", symbolizing birth and overt violence...

A charming candlestick figure of Ashinaga, a playful spirit in Japanese folklore with incredibly long legs. His counterpart, Tenaga, is the long-armed spirit who would ride on Ashinaga's shoulders and, working together, they would catch many fish from the ocean. Ashinaga is hand-carved with adorable features.

Antique Japanese temple carving, beautifully carved with remnants of red and black pigments. The imagery of a fu dog between large peonies represents protection (fu dog) over wealth and prosperity (peonies).

A Japanese okimono of a tiger, fully carved out of Keyaki (elm) wood with fantastic detailing. The tiger sits hunched over with fixated eyes, fangs out, and tail wrapped tightly against its body. Signature on bottom reads : Chizan December, Meiji 18th year.

A ghoulish character from the Otsu-e pantheon, the Oni no Nenbutsu, a devil in priests robes, stands grinning, hammer in one hand to bang his bell and a ledger in the other in which are noted all the peoples sins. This figure is carved of wood and covered in lacquer and mineral paints. Dating from the 19th century (Later Edo period) it is 13 inches (33 cm) tall. There are some losses to the pigments accentuating the antique feel.
