A Chinese court "chao fu" silk skirt, altered as a Carnival costume, using one quarter of the skirt as a flap (photo No. 6). Night blue silk with sixteen dragon roundels and four five-clawed "long" dragons pursuing the flaming pearl among clouds, bats and cranes, above waves, stylized rocks and the "lishui" pattern. Embroidery in polychrome satin stitch and couched metal threads...

A male front Mandarin square with a tiger, denoting the 3rd military rank. Silk tapestry (kossu, k'o-suu) with metallic threads and painted details. The animal is standing on a rock above deep water, the ground with Taoist longevity symbols. Blue silk lining. The background was probably covered by peacock feathers, rarely survived to the present days. Reference: "Ladder to the Clouds" by Jackson & Hugus Berkeley 1999, for similar badges...

1900's Chinese Silk Embroidered Civil Rank Badge Metallic Threads with Bird

It is 10.7 inches (27.5 cm) long and wide. It is 51 gram.

It has stains, frayed at the edges, loose, pulling, and missing threads, separation, split seams, tears, papers stuck at the back, toning, wears, and discoloration (as seen in the photos).

This is presumed to be central panel taken from 100 bird coat from the Bai Ling area. It has been bordered and backed by new fabric. The central panel is very tightly split-thread satin-stitched embroidery over a silk felted (non-woven) fabric. This piece is in pristine condition, and measures approximately 30" by 30"
