Very Rare Chinese Song / Yuan Dynasty Buddhist Lotus Jar with Sanskrit Inscription

This very rare, possibly unique, pottery jar was made between the 10th and 13th centuries, during the Five Dynasties period (AD 906 - 960), Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279) or possibly the Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368) and has been excavated from a Buddhist site in Yunnan province. 

It is one of the most unusual Yunnan jars that we have seen. The design represents either lotus leaves or a lotus blossom...

Pair of Chinese Southern Song dynasty qingbai (yingqing) porcelain glazed funerary jars with short rounded body decorated on the base of the long neck with a relief stringy dragon striding above seven moulded applied human figures standing side by side around the circumference. Chinese Tang dynasty Changsha ware small jar. 7,5 cm diameter. 5 cm high. Good condition.

The motif of an elephant with a vase on its back has an auspicious meaning of "peaceful times (taiping youxiang 太平有象 - when there is peace, there are signs)". This motif was popular in Qing Dynasty, we date this one to 19th century. The elephant is in perfect condition. Length:9-1/2"; height: 9-1/2".

Pair of Chinese early Republic period baluster form porcelain vases covered overall in a flambé transmutation style glaze (referred to as "san yang kai tai") of oxblood red and green that darkens to nearly black. The glaze drips down into the flared mouth and stops short of the unglazed base. 8 3/4" to just under 9” high each. Early 20th century. Very good overall condition...

A small Chinese porcelain plate decorated with famille rose enamel depicting a foo dog playing with a colorful ball. A six characters Qianlong mark is on the bottom and it was made in the period. The Plate is in perfect condition. Diameter: 6".

A small Chinese trumpet shaped porcelain vase in gilt mirror-black glaze, six characters "Daqing Kangxi Nianzhi" mark inside the foot rim, we date it to late 19th century. The vase is in perfect condition beside gilt losing. Height: 6"

A pair of Chinese porcelain cups decorated with birds and flowers in famille rose enamel. 19th century. Matching hardwood stands. The cups are in perfect condition; the hardwood stands have small age cracks. Diameter of cups: 3".

Two Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period porcelain lidded ginger jars densely decorated around the circumference in famille rose enamels with a continuous spring fishing festival scene. This pattern is often referred to as the "one hundred boys" motif. Children are on the street performing the dragon dance, participants are seated in a dragon boat, and onlookers watch from a bridge and a traditional building. Two rare turquoise glazed foo lion candle holders of the Ming dynasty, these are not the typical joss stick holders, for reference of this type, please refer to the book " Song dynasty ceramics" by Rose Kerr. Shown on page 57 fig. 53, is a candlestick in the form of a lion, though dated 12th-13th century, the spouted form atop the backside of the lion renders it a candlestick. In good condition with minor chips and grazing of the glaze, all commiserate with age. They measure 6 inches high...

Pair of Chinese late Qing dynasty Guangxu period hexagonal form hat stands with melon form vent holes decorated in underglaze blue on a white porcelain ground with various figures interspersed among auspicious objects. Scrolling vines are at the top of one. The interiors are glazed with only the footrims left unglazed. Circa 1900. 10 1/2" high each. Very good overall condition. One had a small professionally executed repair to an edge that is not visible to the eye or under black light...
